Barangaroo Pavilion Competition

Barangaroo, NSW - Gadigal Country (Eora Nation)

A poetic competition entry developed to create a coastal sanctuary of reflection, gathering, and cultural storytelling on the shores of Sydney Harbour.

e8urban collaborated with Stephen Pearse Architecture and Designing with Country consultants, The Gaimaragal Group, to prepare a competition entry for the Barangaroo Development Corporation’s Barangaroo Pavilion project. Conceived as a poetic journey, the concept establishes a tranquil retreat from the surrounding urban environment—offering a place for reflection, gathering, healing, and celebration along the harbour foreshore.

Developed directly alongside local knowledge holders and custodians, the design synthesises rich cultural narratives to honour the enduring presence and echoes of the Gadigal, Wangal, and Cammeraigal peoples. The spatial framework draws core creative inspiration from traditional navigation, the sky world, land, waterways, and Indigenous creation stories.

By translating these timeless connections into a contemporary pavilion structure, the proposal seeks to deepen appreciation for the original custodians of the land.

The concept was a poetic journey;

A place to gather, reflect and rest to escape the city.
Echoes and whispers of the Gadigal, Wangal and Cammeraigal peoples.
Original people of place, expanding our appreciation and expanding our national narrative and culture to the world.
Navigation, sky world, land, waterways, creation stories and the harbour are our key inspirations.
A design developed with local knowledge holders and custodians.
