Commissioned by NSW Land and Housing Corporation, this urban design study established a balanced rezoning framework for South Eveleigh, delivering social, affordable, and market housing alongside expanded public space.

e8urban prepared a comprehensive urban design study supporting the rezoning of a complex site on Explorer Street, South Eveleigh, within the City of Sydney Local Government Area. The project sought to unlock strategic state-owned land to deliver a mixed-tenure precinct containing social, affordable, and private market housing.

The resulting Preferred Option was shaped through rigorous site analysis, design testing, and iterative spatial modeling to satisfy ambitious housing targets while significantly increasing the quantum and quality of public open space across the site. e8urban’s scheme carefully responds to the surrounding urban fabric, balancing built form density with solar access, pedestrian connectivity, and sensitive transition heights to neighboring residential areas.

The design process was highly collaborative, developed in close coordination with a multi-disciplinary consultant team and through direct engagement with Urban Design Officers from the City of Sydney. Furthermore, the master plan reflects key insights gathered through a comprehensive stakeholder and community engagement process. By harmonizing social housing objectives with high-quality public domain outcomes, the study provides a robust planning framework to guide the transformation of Explorer Street into an inclusive, resilient urban community.
