Re-imagining car-dominant vehicular corridors into climate-resilient, bio-rich ecological networks that prioritise biodiversity, active transport, and civic wellness.

Urban streets represent a significant land-take across our cities, with communities spending a substantial portion of their lives navigating them. Conventional street design has prioritised vehicular access, resulting in vast expanses of asphalt, with associated voids in character, urban heat impacts, and a fragmented public domain. The Streetscape Ecosystem is an exploration of how those existing road corridors can be systematically transformed into high-performing, citywide ecosystems.

The study targets multi-lane asphalt thoroughfares, rationalising vehicle capacity to reclaim public space for ecological and human infrastructure. Through an animated spatial sequence, the corridor is retrofitted with protected cycling networks, generous pedestrian zones, safe crossing points, and fully integrated Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) systems that collect and filter stormwater natively. High-canopy urban forestry is introduced to dramatically reduce ambient heat, while integrated seating and gathering spaces enable personal and collective wellness.

This explorative Design Lab animation demonstrates how urban streets can work harder for both city communities and natural systems—edging closer toward a true landscape city where biodiversity, climate resilience, and public life coexist seamlessly within the everyday streetscape.
